Joana is six years old. She loves to go to the park every weekend. One Saturday, she woke up very early. She got dressed and went to her mother. "Ma, let's go to the park now." Her mother looks at the clock and it showed:





What time did Joana wake up? Was it the right time to go to the park? Why or why not?


How do you tell a time?


The clock in the picture is an analog clock. It has moving hands that point to the hours or minutes shown by the numbers 1-12. 

The short hand tells the hour. We can call it the hour hand. We write the hour as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12.








The long hand shows the minutes. We can call it the minute hand.  Every number tells us the number of minutes. 









1= 5 minutes
2= 10
3= 15
4 =20
5 =25
6= 30
7= 35
8= 40
9= 45
10= 50
11= 55
12 = 60* 
            *but we write this as :00 to show the new hour



How do you tell time by an hour?

The long hand points to 12 and we write it as :00

The short hand points to 6 and write it as it is, 6. 

The clock shows 6:00. We read this as "six o'clock".
